Hot take: the week I finally got my forge to hold temp, I also burned a $40 billet of 1084
Spent most of last week in my garage shop in Dayton dialing in the air on my coal forge, got it holding around 2300 degrees steady for the first time and felt like I'd finally cracked it. Then Thursday I got cocky, walked away for two minutes to grab a coffee, and came back to a 1084 billet glowing like a birthday candle. Lesson was cheap for a change. How do you all keep yourself from stepping away when the heat is just right?
Ha, so the forge finally learned to hold temp and your billet learned to become a shooting star. That is the classic trap though, the heat gets perfect and suddenly your brain says "coffee run, nothing can go wrong." I get around it by putting my coffee on the bench before I even light the fire, so there is no reason to walk off. When the steel looks just right, that is your cue to stay put and stare at it like a hawk. Cheap lesson is right, that is like a $40 tuition payment to the school of hard knocks.
