I finally switched from coal to propane in my forge and the difference in my welds is night and day
I spent about 6 months fighting with coal in my little rivet forge and could never get a steady heat for forge welding. Last weekend I borrowed a buddy's single burner propane forge and did 4 test welds on some 3/8 inch mild steel bar stock. Every single one took a set on the first try with no flux boils or cold shuts, which never happened with coal. The cleaner heat and the fact I could actually see the steel color without squinting through smoke made all the difference. Anyone else make this jump and did you ever go back to coal for certain jobs?
