A reviewer in Phoenix told me my detail callouts were a mess

I was working on a set of commercial kitchen plans last month, and the plan checker, a guy named Mark, wrote back that my section callouts were 'jumping all over the sheet' and hard to follow. He specifically said to group related details in one area, like putting all the exhaust hood sections together. I re-did the sheet that way, and the next submission got approved in two days. Has anyone else had a plan checker give you a simple layout tip that stuck?

Unpopular opinion: The 'heckler's veto' is killing real debate at my school

I saw a guest speaker get shouted down at UC Berkeley last month for having a view people didn't like. The crowd called it a protest, but it was just stopping everyone else from hearing him. This matters because now the administration just cancels events if they think there will be a loud reaction, which means we never get to argue with ideas we disagree with. Has your campus started doing this too, where a few loud people decide what gets said for everyone?

Warning: I almost ruined my Orion Nebula shot by using the wrong stacking method

Last month I tried stacking 50 light frames in a popular free program, just using the default settings. The result was a noisy, soft mess. Then I followed a guide from a local astronomy club member in Tucson and used a different, more manual program, carefully calibrating with 30 dark frames and 20 flats. The difference was SHOCKING. The second image had crisp detail in the Trapezium cluster and way less grain. Has anyone else found that taking the extra time for proper calibration frames is a total game changer?

TIL a trick for getting cleaner cores with less scrap

We kept having issues with core blowouts on our medium sized gray iron castings, maybe one in ten would come out with a bad spot. Tried adjusting the sand mix, the binder, nothing really fixed it. Then our old foreman, who retired last year, stopped by and said to try pre-heating the core boxes just a bit before you shoot them. Not a lot, just enough that you can't hold your hand on it for more than a few seconds. We hooked up a simple heat gun to warm the aluminum boxes for about 90 seconds before each cycle. Scrap rate on that job line dropped to maybe one in fifty almost right away. The heat seems to help the sand skin set faster against the metal. Anyone else tried something like this on their core shooters?

Honestly, that $80 pH meter I bought for my kombucha almost ruined a whole batch

Ngl, I was so excited to get precise readings. But after a week, the readings started jumping all over the place. Calibrated it twice with the solution it came with, no good. My SCOBY looked fine, but the meter said the pH was way off. I almost dumped it. Used my old paper test strips instead and it was perfectly acidic. Total waste of money for something that nearly caused a panic. Has anyone found a reliable digital meter that doesn't freak out after a few uses?

Shoutout to the 'write a story from a grocery receipt' prompt that actually worked

I saw that prompt floating around for years and always thought it was dumb, like, how creative can you get with a list of eggs and milk? But last week, I was stuck on a project and decided to try it with my own receipt from a trip to the store in Portland. I mean, I had broccoli, a six pack of beer, duct tape, and a birthday card. I forced myself to write a 500 word scene, and idk, maybe it's just me but something clicked. Instead of a boring list, it became a story about a guy trying to fix a broken shelf for his roommate's surprise party, and the whole thing just flowed out in about twenty minutes. It taught me that a real, dumb limit can kick your brain into gear way better than a blank page. Has anyone else had a prompt they thought was silly totally unlock a piece for them?

Tried a new butter brand for my shortbread and the difference was crazy

Used the cheap store stuff first and got greasy puddles, but switching to Kerrygold gave me perfect, crumbly cookies. Anyone have a good butter brand for pie crust?
