Vent: My old coal forge beats any new gas one hands down

People act like gas forges are the only way to work now. I still use my grandad's coal setup for everything. Yeah, it's dirty and takes longer to heat up. But the control I get over the fire is unreal. I've tried friend's propane rigs and they just don't feel right.

Notice how often we ditch stuff that still works perfectly fine just because it's not the new hotness. I mean your forge is a great example, it has that personal feel modern tools often miss. Idk, maybe it's just me but that connection matters.

Actually, you hit on something @mia_ross that goes way beyond forges. See it all the time with phones, where a perfectly good one gets traded just for a slightly better camera. It feels like we're trained for this constant upgrade cycle, like things are meant to break or feel old. That personal feel you mentioned, it gets lost when everything is just another shiny, replaceable object. Makes the stuff we keep and fix mean a whole lot more.

Why change? My coal forge always worked.

But is upgrading always such a bad thing? I see where @mia_ross is coming from with the personal connection, but sometimes new stuff just does the job better. Like my buddy had an old truck that never broke down, but his new one gets way better gas mileage and has airbags. A phone with a better camera might actually save a blurry kid's birthday photo. Not every change is about chasing shiny objects, sometimes it's just practical. Making it sound like a moral failing to buy anything new feels like a stretch.
