My NES from 1987 finally died last Tuesday and I'm weirdly sad about it
I was playing Super Mario Bros. 3 and the screen just went black, no blinking light, nothing. Took it to a repair guy in Portland who said the 72 pin connector was shot, and he wanted $85 to fix it, which is more than I paid for the console at a garage sale in 2005. Is it worth fixing, or should I just finally buy a RetroN and call it a day?
That same thing happened to my front loader about three years ago (mid game of Contra, of all things) and I just could not bring myself to toss it in the trash. Mine had a blown capacitor too, so the guy quoted me $70 and I paid it without even thinking twice. The way I see it, these old consoles are only going to get harder to find in working shape, and a RetroN just does not feel the same in your hands. That click when you push the cartridge down is half the whole experience for me.
