Appreciation post: players who actually read the rulebook before game night
Last Saturday at the Southside game cafe we had a group try to play Spirit Island for the first time. One guy kept moving the Dahan as if they were explorers, another insisted blight tokens were just victory points. We spent 40 minutes correcting things that would have been clear if anyone skimmed the index. But then this other player, Sarah, had actually gone through the setup section twice at home. She caught two errors before we even started and pointed out a rule about fast powers that saved our whole first turn. It got me thinking, how often does one prepared person make or break a session? Do you all have a rule about who reads the manual for heavier games, or do you just wing it and hope the teach goes okay? I'm starting to think we need a designated rules nerd in every group.
