Last week, the city rolled out this new AI traffic light system on Main Street, promising less congestion. Instead, it was a total gridlock from Monday to Friday. The lights would get stuck, letting one side go for five minutes straight while our line of cars didn't move at all. I was late to three jobs. The worst part was calling the city hotline and hearing, 'The system is learning, please be patient.' It's one thing to test this stuff in a lab, but using us as live training data without a clear off switch feels wrong. Who's responsible when an algorithm's bad guess costs people real time and money? Has anyone else's local government pushed out an AI project that clearly wasn't ready?

Honestly, I kept moving it closer to my south-facing window in Phoenix, and the leaves kept getting brown crispy spots. Vent: My 'delete me' request to a data broker turned into a month long scavenger hunt

So I finally got around to trying to scrub my info from those creepy people search sites, you know, the ones that list your old addresses and relatives. I picked one called InfoLookup (not the real name, but close enough). Their opt-out page wanted a photo of my driver's license, a utility bill, and a handwritten note. Fine, annoying, but I did it. A week later, I get an email saying my documents were 'unclear'. I re-sent them. Another week, another rejection, this time because my note 'did not precisely match the required language'. I had to dig through their help forum to find the exact magical phrase they wanted. The whole back-and-forth took 28 days total. It felt less like protecting my privacy and more like jumping through hoops designed to make me quit. Has anyone else found a data broker that actually makes the removal process simple, or are they all this bad?

Shoutout to the old timer at the Mid-Atlantic forge-in

I was at the Mid-Atlantic forge-in last month and got stuck trying to forge weld a simple chain link. This guy, must've been in his 70s, walked over and just said 'your fire's too clean, kid.' He had me add a bit of green wood to the coal to make a reducing atmosphere. The scale just stopped forming and the weld took on the first tap. I'd been fighting that for weeks. Anyone else use that green wood trick for forge welding?

Driving through the old part of town and saw a fence that's been standing for 50 years

I was over in the historic district last week, just looking at some of the old houses. I saw this one cedar fence that the homeowner said was put up in the 1970s. The posts were set in concrete and the whole thing was leaning maybe two inches, but it was still solid as a rock. What's the oldest fence you've seen that's still doing its job?

Just figured out my thermostat schedule was backwards

I got my power bill for July and it was $40 higher than last year, even though I thought I was being good. My neighbor mentioned he sets his AC to 78 when he's home and 82 when he's out, not the other way around. I had mine set to cool to 72 when I got home from work, which made the unit run super hard during the hottest part of the day. Flipping the schedule around last week already feels different.
