An old pipefitter's comment about preheating finally clicked for me
Sat down with a retired welder at the union hall in Gary last week, and he said 'you're not heating the steel, you're heating the moisture out of your own head.' I've been rushing preheat checks on 1-inch plate for years, but now I slow down and think about that every time. Anyone else have a throwaway line from an old hand that stuck with you longer than any textbook?
