Crane hoist cable frayed mid-lift on a 14 ton tank yesterday
It snapped clean through three strands over the drum flange while we were setting a vessel at the refinery in Gary, thank god we had the tag line wrapped, but now I'm second guessing every pre-shift inspection I've done this year has anyone else had a hoist cable fail like that without any warning signs on the braid?
You checked the braid for birdcaging or broken wires right where it rides the flange? That's where they hide. Had a 20 ton come down on a spreader bar back in '08 because the cable looked fine everywhere except a two inch flat spot you could only feel with your bare hand. Now I run a gloved hand over the whole length every single morning, takes five extra minutes but worth it when you're lifting something that heavy. Also worth looking at your drum groove depth, if it's worn down the cable's taking side load it was never meant to handle.
