Our club picked a 900 page book for January and half the group quit by page 100
I said at the meeting we should cap picks at 400 pages and got outvoted because two people wanted the challenge. We met on the 14th and only three of us had finished, so we spent 40 minutes talking about a book most of us never read. How do other clubs handle members who keep pushing these massive picks?
Man, the real issue is that picking a book is a group thing and your club let two people act like it was a dare. What worked for us was splitting the month in two, one short book everyone reads and one long book that's optional, so the challenge people get their fix without dragging the rest down. Turns out the folks pushing the giant picks usually just want to feel smart, and giving them a side lane keeps the main meeting from turning into a book club for three people.
