PSA: My book club fought for 45 minutes over whether a novel was 'literary' or just 'genre'

Last month at our meeting in Portland, someone called a fantasy book 'not real literature' and the room exploded. We spent the whole time arguing about what counts as literary versus genre fiction instead of talking about the actual story. I finally had to step in and say the author themselves called it speculative fiction on their website. Has anyone else had a book club debate spiral into weird definitions like this?

Just realized our book club debate about character deaths was totally one-sided

Last month my group argued for 45 minutes over whether killing off the main character in act 2 was a brave choice or a lazy move. I was on team "lazy" because it felt like shock value. Then I re-read the foreshadowing on pages 112, 189, and 214 the next day. Turns out the author planted clues all along and I missed them completely. Now I'm wondering if my whole stance was just me not paying close attention. Has anyone else had a book club debate flip on them after a second read?

That $30 book light I got off Amazon last month was a total waste

I figured a cheap clip-on light would be fine for late-night reading with my club, but the battery died after 45 minutes and the clip snapped on our third meeting. Now I'm stuck holding my phone flashlight over the page like a caveman while everyone else has those proper rechargeable ones. Anybody found a solid one under $50 that actually lasts through a whole discussion?

Hit exactly 50 books read this year and it caught me off guard

I set a goal of 40 books for my book club this year, but last night I hit 50 without even realizing it. I was just updating my reading log and there it was. Most were fiction picks from our monthly debates, but a few were random non-fiction I grabbed at the library. Have any of you guys suddenly passed a milestone like that? What did you do to celebrate or keep going?

Spent $85 on that fancy annotated Moby Dick and it was a total waste

My book club picked Moby Dick for next month and I thought splurging on the annotated edition from the local shop would help me get through it. The notes are so dense and academic that I spend more time reading tiny footnotes than the actual story. It cost me $85 and I still haven't finished chapter 3 because I keep getting distracted by all the whale blubber trivia. Has anyone else regretted buying a special edition for a hard read?

My group in Austin fell apart last month when half of us stuck to the printed questions and the other half wanted to rant about the ending, which side are you on after that kind of trainwreck?

Question about that debate on genre fiction vs literary fiction at my book club last night

So we had this big discussion at our meetup in Denver. This one member, Sarah, said she refuses to read anything labeled 'genre' because it's 'just entertainment' and not 'real literature.' She used Stephen King as an example. I brought up that King has won the National Book Award and she just waved it off. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of gatekeeping in their group? How do you even respond to that without it turning into a fight?

Question about how my book club defines 'classic' literature

At our last meeting I brought up a newer novel from 2019 and called it a potential classic. Three people immediately shut me down saying a book needs at least 50 years of staying power to earn that label. But then another member pointed out that books like 'The Color Purple' were called classics within a decade of coming out. So where is the actual line? Has anyone else in your club run into this debate about what makes something a classic?

Unpopular opinion: the library book drop ate my copy of Dune and I blame the design

Last Tuesday I returned a borrowed hardcover to the downtown branch drop box. Slipped it in nice and careful. Got an email two days later saying it was never checked in. Now I'm out $28 and the library lady said "maybe next time just hand it to a person." Has anyone else had a book vanish into those metal slots? I'm thinking of leaving a sticky note trap on the next one.

Got stuck in a book club debate about a library visit gone wrong

I visited the main public library downtown last Tuesday for our monthly meetup, and the whole place just felt off to me. The new layout has the fiction split across three different floors with no clear signs, so I spent 20 minutes hunting for the mystery section. Some of our members loved the change because they said it opens up more space for events, but I think it just makes borrowing books a hassle. How are you supposed to get through a novel for discussion when you can't even find it on the shelf? Has anyone else dealt with a library renovation that totally wrecked the browsing experience?

The one book club debate that still bugs me 2 years later

Had this guy in my old book club, Dave, who would always shut down conversations about the author's background. We were discussing 'The Round House' and I brought up how Louise Erdrich's experiences probably shaped the legal stuff in the book. Dave got real defensive and said we should only judge the text itself, not the person who wrote it. I remember he literally said 'the book should stand on its own' and crossed his arms. It stuck with me because half the club agreed with him and the other half wanted to talk about context. We never got to finish discussing the tribal jurisdiction themes because of that split. Has anyone else run into this purist vs context argument in their book club?

I listened to the audiobook version of "Project Hail Mary" on my commute last month, but when I tried to bring up specific passages at our club meeting, I kept fumbling with timestamps. Last month at our library book club, this guy named Tom said the ending of 'The Road' was too fuzzy and ruined the whole story for me. He went on for ten minutes about how it needed a clear explanation. I realized he was just mad that it didn't wrap up like a TV show. Can we talk about how long it took me to figure out the book club voting system?

I joined a new book club back in January and thought picking our next read would be simple... just a quick vote, right? Nope. That comment about slow burns in my book club got me thinking

Last week someone in my group said they 'fast forward through descriptions' in books and I was stunned. We were reading The House in the Cerulean Sea which has tons of slow scenes, and half the group loved the pacing while the other half wanted to skip to the plot. How do you guys handle books where the buildup is long but the payoff is huge? Have you ever dropped a book club pick because it was too slow?

Had to pick between the hardcover and the paperback for book club this month

I chose the hardcover because I wanted it to look nice on my shelf but that thing weighs like 5 pounds. Dragging it to my Wednesday night book club at the downtown library was a pain. Plus I paid $28 for it and Sarah got the paperback for $12 and read it in two days. Has anyone else regretted going for the fancy version?

I read The Midnight Library by Matt Haig for our March meetup, but everyone else trashed it as too predictable. My book club finally had a real debate after 8 months of polite nodding

We've been meeting every other Thursday for almost a year, and everyone always just agreed with whoever spoke first. Last week we read "The Midnight Library" and I brought up how I thought the ending was too neat and predictable. Two other members jumped in saying they felt the same way, but then Carol pushed back hard saying the whole point was hope. We went back and forth for 20 minutes straight and it was the most fun we've ever had. Has anyone else gotten their group to break out of the agree-about-everything rut?

Why does nobody talk about how book club debates can ruin friendships

I got feedback from my book club after we fought over 'The Midnight Library' for two hours. One member said I was too intense about my take that the book was shallow. Now I try to let others talk first and ask questions instead of pushing my opinion. Has anyone else had to change how they argue in a book club to keep the peace?
