Stopped fighting old soot and finally switched to a better vacuum setup

I spent last month in Cincinnati trying to clean a chimney that had 3 years of buildup from a wood stove. My old shop vac kept clogging every 15 minutes. So last week I finally grabbed a proper HEPA vacuum with a 5 micron bag and a cyclone separator. It cost me around 400 bucks but I finished the job in half the time. First time I didn't have to stop every 10 minutes to unclog the hose. What do you guys use for heavy soot jobs?

Old timer at the shop told me to stop using impact guns on lug nuts

Last month I had this guy in his 70s bring in a F-150 for a tire rotation. He watched me zip off the lugs with my impact and just shook his head. Said I was wrecking the threads over time and making life harder for the next guy. I rolled my eyes at first but then a Mercury Grand Marquis came in with stripped studs the next week. Switched to a torque wrench by hand and honestly it takes maybe 2 extra minutes per wheel. Has anyone else had to unlearn bad habits from older mechanics?

Unpopular opinion: concrete blocks beat poured concrete for small bunker builds

Everyone in my local group raves about poured walls for fallout shelters. I went with cinder blocks for my 8x10 bunker outside of Omaha. Took me three weekends instead of one because of the mortar work, but let me tell you - I can modify it. Last month I cut a hole for an extra vent pipe in twenty minutes with a masonry bit. Try that with a poured wall. Plus if a crack shows up, I just patch one block instead of worrying about the whole structure. Has anyone else had better luck with block on their own build?

My basement lighting upgrade cost me a whole Saturday

I spent 6 hours last weekend swapping out the old fluorescent shop lights in my basement for LED linkable panels from Home Depot. I figured it would be a quick 2 hour job but I hit a snag when the mounting brackets didn't line up with the studs in my drop ceiling. Last week I was digging through my receipt app and noticed a tiny link about data sharing. I clicked it and found out my local Giant supermarket had been selling my purchase history to a third party for the past 3 years. I got curious and called their customer service line... the lady on the phone said it was buried in their terms of service update from 2021. Nobody reads those things, right? Saw a sentencing algorithm flag a guy as high risk just because his zip code overlapped with a gang injunction zone

I was on a local committee reviewing how our county uses risk assessment tools for bail decisions. We had a case where a kid got flagged as a violent reoffense risk. Turns out his address sat inside a gang injunction area from 10 years ago. He never had a single arrest for anything violent, just got caught with a little weed three times. The algorithm treated living at that address like a prior assault charge. Nobody on the committee had thought to check how geographic boundaries played into the scoring. Took a high school intern on the data team to pull the correlation table and show us. Has anyone else run into location data creating that kind of unfair bias in these systems?

My buddy at the coffee shop fixed my credit mess in 10 minutes

I was sitting at this little place in Austin last month stressing about my credit score. It was stuck at 620 and I could not figure out why. This guy named Mark who works the counter saw me looking at my credit report on my phone and just casually asked what was up. I told him about a medical bill from like 2019 that I thought was paid off. He said go check the actual date on the bill and call the hospital billing department directly. I did it that same day and turns out they had a $45 mistake on their end that was reporting me as late every month. After I got it fixed my score jumped 50 points. Has anyone else found random small billing errors messing up their score?

Thought automated onboarding was snake oil, proved myself wrong in 6 weeks

I run ops for a mid-size SaaS company and I've always hated the idea of those fancy onboarding tools. Seemed like a waste of money when our CS team could just send emails and do calls. Stubbornly ran things that way for about 2 years. Then we signed a new client with 50 users who needed setup by a certain date and our CS lead was out sick for a week. I caved and tried a free trial of a tool called Userpilot just to get through it. Set up a basic walkthrough sequence in about 3 hours and it handled 80% of the setup questions without anyone lifting a finger. Client was happy, our team didn't burn out, and I felt like an idiot for being so stubborn. Has anyone else had a tool they swore they'd never use turn out to be the thing that saved their week?

The sunrise at Mather Point last spring? I showed up still drunk from the night before. Thought I was seeing double, but nope the canyon was just that huge. TIL my local library has a streaming service for shows

OH MAN that is such a good find. I've been using Kanopy for like six months now and what nobody really talks about is that they have a WHOLE section of old silent films and experimental stuff you can't find anywhere else. I watched this bizarre 1920s German horror movie called "The Hands of Orlac" and it was absolutely WILD, the special effects for the time are insane. Plus they have all these random foreign documentaries that never made it to Netflix. The selection is way deeper than people realize if you're willing to dig past the mainstream stuff.
