TIL my $15 gas station phone mount cracked my dash and I thought the vent clip was a scam
Last Tuesday I was driving to my sister's place in Reno when the clip on that cheap mount gave out and the whole thing, phone and all, fell right onto my shifter. The mount was one of those vent clip ones I got at a Love's for $15 about 7 months back, and I always figured the suction cup people were just being paranoid. When it popped off it left two deep gouges in the plastic trim above the radio, and the phone landed screen down on the gear knob. Screen survived, dash did not. I spent Saturday at a pick and pull in Sparks hunting a replacement trim piece and of course the only one they had was already cracked too. Now I'm out $60 for a trim panel plus the $15 I lit on fire in the first place, and I keep thinking about the suction mount my brother uses that has never once moved. Anyone else get burned by the vent clip style, or is there a mount that actually stays put when you hit a pothole on 395?
Heard a guy on a truck forum say the same thing happened to him, but his phone actually bounced off the passenger seat and slid under the brake pedal. Scared him half to death on the freeway. He switched to a suction cup on the windshield and swears it holds even on washboard roads. I read somewhere that the vent slats themselves get bent over time from the weight, so even a good clip starts slipping after a few months. Sounds like your dash took one for the team so your phone didn't.
