Warning: I brought a 400 page fantasy novel to book club in Reno and it blew up the whole night
Back in February 2019 my book club in Reno picked a chunky fantasy novel, about 400 pages, and I was the only one who finished it. The other six people showed up with notes from the first 60 pages and a lot of opinions anyway. What made that Tuesday stand out was how fast it turned from talking about the book into arguing about whether it's fair to show up unprepared and still vote on the next pick. We went two hours past our usual stop time, and the cafe owner finally flicked the lights at 9:45 to get us out. One guy, Dave, said reading halfway still "counts" and I said it doesn't count for a vote, and the room split right down the middle. We ended up making a new rule after that night: no voting unless you hit page 100, or you lose your pick for the next round. Has your group ever set a page cutoff, and did it actually stop the fights or just start new ones?
