One retired binder changed my mind about fanfiction in 10 minutes

I used to roll my eyes at anyone binding fanfic, thought it was a waste of good materials. Last month at the Portland book fair, an older guy named Tom showed me a small fandom anthology he'd sewn himself, no presses, just a sewing frame and patience. He pointed out the endbands and said, 'The story doesn't matter, the craft is the same.' He walked me through his flat-back spine and it clicked, the technique was identical to what I do with old poetry. Now I take on the occasional fanbinding project for practice, anyone else started with a bias like that?

Is it possible that fanbinding actually preserves more obscure fic than the original archives ever did, since those servers keep dying and the paper just sits there?
