Met a guy at the nursery who changed how I water my houseplants

I was at Green Thumb Nursery last Saturday and this older guy saw me drowning a peace lily. He just said 'stick your finger in the soil, not the schedule' and walked off. Has anyone else gotten advice from a random stranger that actually stuck with you?

Finger poking just disturbs the roots, a good schedule works fine if you actually stick to it.

I saw this plant guy on YouTube say pretty much the same thing. He showed roots getting damaged from all the jabbing, even if you're careful. I started using a moisture meter instead and my plants are doing way better now.
