That talk with a site engineer changed how I lay brick in winter
Last month on a job in Des Moines, the site engineer said my mortar was freezing before it set. I thought my mix was fine, but he showed me how the water temp dropped overnight and created weak joints in the first row. He said to heat the water to 50 degrees before mixing and cover the pile with insulated blankets. Tried it the next morning, and the mortar stayed workable an extra forty minutes. That one tip saved me from tearing out a full wall. Anyone else adjust their setup when temps hover near freezing?
