Warning: I stopped buttering the back of my brick 3 weeks ago after 12 years in the trade
A guy on a job in Toledo showed me his corners were tighter without it and I checked mine, he was right. Anybody else lay dry on the back or am I going to regret this on the next freeze?

The part about "tighter corners without it" is the piece I'd slow down on. Tighter corners come from how you tool the joint and how wet the brick is, not from whether the back got buttered. The back butter is doing a different job than the face, it's filling the gap so water has nowhere to sit when it freezes and thaws. Toledo gets real winters, and a dry back means every little gap behind that head joint is a spot for ice to push things apart. Three weeks in warm weather won't show you anything yet, wait until February and check those same corners again. I'd bet money you go back to buttering before spring.
