TIL dry beans from the bulk bin beat canned beans on cost and taste, and I wasted 6 months on cans
For the longest time I bought canned black beans at the grocery on 5th in Columbus, like 4 cans a week at 99 cents each, and never did the math. Back in January my neighbor Rosa handed me a bag of dry beans from the bulk bin, cost me $1.79 for a full pound, and that one bag turned into roughly 12 cups of cooked beans, which is like 6 or 7 cans worth. I soak them overnight in the same pot I cook them in and throw in a chopped onion and some cumin, and honestly they taste way better than anything that came out of a can. The only catch is remembering to start them the night before, and the first couple batches came out a little mushy because I cooked them too long. Now I do a big pot on Sunday and portion them out for the week. Anybody got a trick for keeping the texture right on pinto beans? Mine keep splitting on me.
