Hit exactly $23 in a hostel kitchen in Lisbon and realized I'd been doing food all wrong
I gave myself a $10 daily food budget for 5 days in Lisbon last spring and ended up spending $23 total by cooking every dinner at the hostel. The trick was shopping at the Pingo Doce near the Anjos metro stop around 8pm, when the fresh bread and marked-down meat go cheap. Breakfast and lunch came from the free hostel basket, and I swear the communal kitchen saved me more than any travel card ever did. Anyone else plan their whole trip around grocery store closing times, or am I the only one checking the discounted bin first?
The "communal kitchen saved me more than any travel card" thing is so true, I read a thread on a budget travel site where people were saying the same. Someone ran the numbers and said cooking just half your meals can cut a trip's food cost by more than half. I've started checking discount bins everywhere now, it's kind of a habit.
