Just lost a full day's pay chasing a bad sensor reading

Honestly, I was working on a 2019 Duramax with a rough idle and the scanner kept pointing to the MAP sensor. Tbh I swapped it out with a new one from the parts store, cost me $140. Ngl the truck ran the same and the code came right back. Turns out the real problem was a tiny crack in the intake boot letting in unmetered air, something I should have pressure tested first. I wasted about 5 hours and that sensor money for nothing. Has anyone else gotten burned by trusting the code reader too much before doing the basic checks?

Showerthought: My kid's school art show made me rethink the whole AI thing

I was at the elementary school art fair in Ann Arbor last Friday, looking at all the finger paintings and clay sculptures. One kid had a whole wall of drawings he made with a free AI art app on his mom's tablet. They looked cool, but he couldn't explain how he made any of them, just kept clicking buttons. That hit me, you know? The other kids could point and say 'I mixed blue and yellow here' or 'this clay is bumpy because I pressed shells into it.' It made me wonder if the real creative part is knowing the steps, not just picking a result from a list. Finally got a stubborn stump out with a trick from an old timer

Had this big maple stump in a backyard in Cedar Rapids that just wouldn't budge, even after grinding. An old guy I know told me to drill a bunch of deep holes and pour in a gallon of cheap cola. I was super skeptical, but after letting it sit for a week, the wood was soft and spongy. I went back with my bar and it came apart like wet cardboard. Has anyone else tried something weird like that that actually worked?

Just hit 500 saved prompts in my notes app and it feels wild

I was cleaning out my phone and saw the folder count. I started saving random ideas there like 2 years ago after a writing workshop in Phoenix. It's everything from 'a detective who only solves crimes in IKEA' to 'what if someone's superpower was perfect parallel parking'. Anyone else have a massive backlog of prompts they'll probably never use?

Saw a board game cafe in Austin with a whole wall of rulebooks

I stopped by this place called Meeple's Tavern last weekend (it's on South Congress, you can't miss it). They had a whole wall, maybe 15 feet long, just filled with binders holding the rulebooks for every game they own. The owner said they started it because people kept asking for the rules to games they'd already put away. It's a simple fix, but it made me wonder how many other spots do this. Does your local game store or cafe have a good system for finding rules?

Looking back at my old phone from 2015 made me rethink the future

I found my old phone in a drawer, a Samsung Galaxy S6, and it hit me how much we've already changed. We went from needing a map, a camera, and a music player in our pockets to just one device that does it all. My service van odometer rolled over 200,000 miles this morning

I was driving to a dryer repair in Mesa when I saw it happen. This is the same Ford Transit I bought used with 80,000 miles on it six years ago. It's carried me and my tools to probably 4,000 service calls. The weird part is, besides normal wear and tear, it's never left me stranded on a job. I just do the oil changes and keep up with the tires. For the other techs with high-mileage rigs, what's the one maintenance thing you swear by that keeps your van running?

My uncle told me to skip the cheap tent and get a Kelty Grand Mesa 4. He was right.

I bought a $50 tent from a big box store for a trip to the Red River Gorge. It leaked the first night it rained. Got the Kelty like he said. Used it three times now, bone dry every time. Anyone have a good rain fly treatment they like for extra protection?
