Unpopular opinion: that 'banned' 1970s crib bumper wasn't the villain people think it was
I keep seeing people say the old padded crib bumpers got pulled because they were proven to smother babies, and that is just not what happened. The real problem was that parents in the 80s and 90s kept using them wrong, tying them to the outside rails of dropside cribs instead of the inside, which turned a $12 piece of fabric into a strangulation hazard in a Denver study of 27 cases. The bumpers themselves were fine when installed per the original 1976 instructions, but once dropside cribs got banned in 2011, nobody could follow those instructions anymore. Has anyone else dug into the actual CPSC recall paperwork on these, or am I the only one who reads that stuff for fun?
Wait, dropside cribs weren't banned until 2011? I ran into this exact mess with hand-me-down bumpers from my mom, and the tie placement is no joke. Tying them to the outside rail is scary easy to do without knowing it.
