I keep seeing people skip the 'fun money' line in their budget

I've helped a few friends set up budgets, and they always want to cut out any spending that isn't a bill. They say things like, 'I'll just be strict and not spend on anything extra.' Every single time, the budget breaks in about two weeks because they feel deprived. I started adding a $50 'no guilt' line for coffee, a book, or whatever, and it's the only thing that makes a budget stick for me. Why do you think people are so scared to plan for small treats? What's your go-to small splurge that keeps you on track?

My wife and I call ours the "taco fund," a solid $75 a month. We were the same way, trying to be perfect and then blowing the whole budget on a random pizza. Now if we want a fancy coffee or a dumb app, it just comes from there. It feels like permission instead of cheating.

Isn't it funny how giving a rule a name makes it easier to follow? I see this all the time, like calling a savings jar a "vacation fund" instead of just money you can't touch. That shift from restriction to purpose is everything. Calling it a taco fund turns a guilty spend into a planned treat, which is way more sustainable. It's a small mental trick that makes sticking to a budget feel less like a punishment.

Ever think about splitting it into two smaller funds? Like one for food treats and one for random app buys. That way you don't blow the whole taco money on one coffee.
