Sat in a diner in Toledo and watched a guy cut off his whole table over one sentence
I was killing time at a diner off I-75 in Toledo on Tuesday, waiting on a part for a customer's truck. Two tables over, this guy in his 50s was eating with his brother and sister, and the brother made some joke about their dad's will that clearly did not land. The guy set his fork down, said "I'm done with all of you," paid his $14 check, and walked out without another word. The sister just sat there staring at his half eaten pancakes and said it had been building for 20 years over stuff nobody in that diner knew about. It made me wonder how many people are one bad joke away from being cut off for good, and whether any of you have seen a split happen that fast over something so small.
Sometimes the person walking out isn't the bad guy in the story, and nobody at that table wants to admit it. I've watched a family where the "joke" was always aimed at one person, every single holiday, for years, and the day he finally left everyone acted shocked like it came out of nowhere. That half eaten plate of pancakes tells you more than the sister's 20 years comment does. He probably gave them a hundred small chances to knock it off and they kept laughing. The one bad joke is never really one bad joke. It's just the last one that fit.
