My 20 year old pressure cooker finally gave up at a bad time
Last Tuesday I was making beans for a big family dinner and the gasket on my old pressure cooker just crumbled into pieces. The pot itself was fine but I could not find a replacement seal for that model anywhere, even online. I ended up driving to three stores in Portland and finally bought a new one with a standard size gasket that I can actually order. It cost me $130 but I figure the old one lasted two decades, so this one should outlive my stove. Has anyone else had to retire a solid pot just because the rubber parts gave out?

I used to think "they just don't build them like they used to" was pure nostalgia, but your gasket story honestly changed my mind. The pot itself was fine for 20 years, but the rubber gave out and that was it. I had a similar thing happen with a blender base where the little rubber stopper on the bottom melted, and nobody sold that specific part. It felt so wasteful to toss the whole thing over a tiny piece of rubber. So yeah, I get the frustration. It's like the machine outlives its own spare parts.
