I finally got the grain match right on a 12 foot walnut countertop after 3 failed glue ups
Kept flipping every other board like a book match and got a giant V down the middle, then a guy at the lumber yard in Tacoma told me to just slide the boards and follow the growth rings, and it clicked on the fourth try, so what do you all use to check grain direction before the glue goes on?
Have you tried the trick of laying a straight edge across the boards before glue up? I read somewhere that you can wet the end grain with a little mineral spirits or denatured alcohol and it makes the grain pop so you can see exactly which way the lines are running. A guy on a woodworking forum said that trick saved him from a few bad glue ups because the wet look shows the true color and direction way better than dry wood. I still do the slide and follow the rings thing too but the alcohol trick helps me double check before I commit. Worth a shot if you ever get stuck on layout again.
