Showerthought: the $8 magnetic parts tray that finally stopped my hinge screws from vanishing
Three years back I was building a run of 14 shaker doors for a kitchen in Eugene, Oregon, and I bet I spent 20 minutes per door just crawling around hunting dropped hinge screws. My knees were shot and I was getting mad at myself every single time one bounced under the bench. Then a buddy who does commercial millwork showed me his setup, which was just one of those cheap magnetic trays stuck to the side of his drill press. I grabbed one for about $8 at the hardware store on a Thursday, and by that weekend I had cut my hinge install time on a set of 6 doors almost in half. Sounds dumb but the screws stay put, I don't lose them, and I'm not swearing on the floor anymore. If you do a lot of hinges or drawer slides, it's worth the pocket change. What are you all using to keep small hardware from rolling off into the void?
I did almost the same thing but with a cheap muffin tin from Goodwill. One cup for each size screw, and it sits right on the bench while I work. Six bucks and my lost screw count went way down.
