Fiber splice tray gave me 12 dB loss until I stopped fighting the slack
Last Tuesday I was doing a residential FTTH install and kept getting terrible readings on the OTDR. Turns out I was cramming the slack into the tray with too tight a bend, kinking the fiber every time. Once I slowed down and routed it in the proper loops, loss dropped to 0.3 dB. Anyone else ever waste an hour troubleshooting something that was just bad tray discipline? What's your go-to trick for keeping slack neat without pinching?
Real talk, the bigger issue is most trays have that stupid little hook thing that everyone ignores, but those bends you think are fine are the exact spots where a microcrack will show up six months later. Route the slack like the manufacturer drew it in the manual, and then take a photo before you close it so you can compare if the loss ever creeps back.
