Debate: who was right about cleaning fungus from lenses?

Old timer at the local shop told me to use hydrogen peroxide to clean lens fungus, not alcohol, said it breaks down spores better. I tried it on a vintage 50mm f/1.4 and the coating got hazy patches, total loss of $100 glass. Do you guys trust hydrogen peroxide for this or stick with isopropyl?
