Warning: I used to think you had to clean every single lens element on a disassembly, but that changed after a Leica M3 job in 2022.

I was working on a customer's M3 and spent over an hour cleaning each element, but the haze was actually only on the rear group. A retired repairer in Chicago told me, 'You're just making dust problems and risking coatings,' and he was right. When do you guys decide to leave well enough alone on a lens clean?

Why risk it if it's not needed?

Totally get that, had the same thing with an old Nikkor. You shine a light through and if the haze is only in one spot, just clean that group. Like king.val said, why risk messing with the good ones. I learned the hard way after putting a tiny scratch on a front element being too careful. Now if it looks clear, I leave it alone lol.

Chicago's guy missed the chance for a perfect, dust-free result.
