A chat with my buddy in Denver totally changed my mind about tent weight

I was complaining about my heavy 4-person tent after a trip to the Sawtooths, and my friend Mark said he'd rather carry an extra two pounds for a tent that can handle a surprise storm without a second thought. He's had his same tent for over a decade through some rough weather, and that really hit different compared to just reading specs online. How much extra weight are you all willing to carry for gear you know you can absolutely trust?

My old three pound tent saved my butt in a Colorado hailstorm.

Yeah that's a solid point from @spencer400. It's funny how the old, simple gear you trust always seems to pull through when things get rough. I've seen it with my old rain jacket and even a cheap backpack. Makes you wonder if we overthink all the new fancy stuff sometimes.

You know, that line about overthinking the fancy stuff really hits home. I used to be all about the latest tech fabrics and grams saved. Then my thirty year old wool sweater kept me warm when my fancy puffy jacket got soaked through on a wet, cold hike. That old thing just doesn't quit. It definitely made me question my whole upgrade mindset.
