Bought a $12 rain tarp instead of a $200 tent footprint, and 40 nights later its still holding
Everyone on here says you need the matching footprint or your tent floor is toast, so I grabbed the cheap blue tarp from a hardware store in Boise last spring and cut it to size. Four trips in the Cascades and two in the rain at Olympic and my floor is drier than my buddies who spent real money on the brand name version. Anyone else skip the footprint and just run a tarp, or am I asking for trouble down the road?
The thing nobody talks about is that tarps are way slicker than tent floors, so depending on your pitch your sleeping pad can slide around all night on the plastic. I just rough up the tarp with sandpaper where my pad goes and it grips fine, plus the slick side helps it slide into tight spots without snagging. Cheap fix that solves the one real downside of going tarp.
