The day I figured out my sleeping pad wasn't the problem, my whole setup was
Back in 2016 I was camping at Devil's Lake in Wisconsin and woke up at 4am freezing my butt off for the third night in a row. I had been blaming my sleeping pad for two seasons, even dropped $130 on a new one, but the cold never went away. Then a guy at the next site, older fella named Ray, watched me blow up my pad and asked why I was pumping it rock hard with my breath. He told me my breath was pumping warm moist air inside and it condensed overnight into cold water vapor, basically sleeping on a bag of damp air. He said inflate it loose, let the foam do the work, and sleep with the valve cracked just a bit. Next trip I tried it and slept warm for the first time in 2 years. Now I watch people at REI mash their thumb into pads and stress about R values and I think, man, have you checked your breath? Has anyone else had a stupid simple fix like this change their whole sleep game?
