1984 Ann Arbor teach-in vs 2024 campus protest, no contest

My dad was at Michigan in 84 and told me about this teach-in they had over divestment. Three days of speakers, open mics, professors arguing with students in the quad. People actually listened to each other, even when they disagreed. This spring I visited a friend who teaches at a state school in Ohio and sat in on a similar debate. It was 45 minutes of people yelling prepared talking points at each other, then two students got in a shouting match over who was more oppressed. No one changed anyone's mind, nobody even tried to respond to a point. The old way at least had a shot at real conversation. The new way is just performance for social media. Has anyone else been to both types of events and noticed the same thing?
