My old debate coach in Spokane said shouting down speakers was a win, and I can't stop thinking about it
I ran into my old debate coach from Gonzaga at a coffee place in Spokane about 3 weeks ago, and she said the students who shut down that speaker on our campus back in the day were the real winners. I pushed back and said that just hands the other side a victim card and kills any chance of changing minds, and she laughed at me. She said I was thinking like a judge and not like an organizer. It has been bugging me for weeks because part of me thinks she is right about the power part, but I still think letting people talk and then tearing apart their ideas is the stronger move. Has anyone here changed their mind on this one way or the other after seeing it play out on their own campus?
