Overheard a student call the 1960s protests 'ancient history'

I was grabbing coffee near the quad at Michigan State last week when I heard a sophomore tell her friend that the anti-war rallies from 1968 are basically 'ancient history' now. It hit me weird because I was at that campus in 1987 and we still talked to veterans from those marches like they were heroes. She wasn't being mean, just stating a fact, but it made me wonder if each generation really does lose the texture of past fights. Does anyone else feel like the current speech debates lose something when we forget how physically risky those old protests were?
