The campus anti-speaker fee is the real free speech issue, not the protest itself
Last week at a public university in Ohio, a group charged the school $4,000 to cover security for a controversial speaker. Everyone was arguing about the shouting and the signs, but nobody talked about how that fee makes it impossible for small groups to bring anyone. If you can't afford the police overtime, you just don't get to speak, that's a bigger chill than any heckler. Why are we treating protest costs as a speech tax but ignoring the fee that blocks the event in the first place? Has anyone else fought their admin over these speaker security charges?
