Why I stopped backing the free speech zone table after a chat with a TA in Denver
I used to think speech codes just protected people's feelings until a grad student at a Denver campus asked me one simple thing at our table last semester: who decides which speech gets punished? She pointed out that the same rule I liked could be flipped on me by the next admin, and that stuck with me more than any debate I ever watched. Has anyone else had a one on one like that actually change their view?
What was it about her question that actually landed? Like was it the idea of the next admin flipping the rule, or did she give you a real example of it happening somewhere? I ask because I've heard the "who decides" line a bunch and it usually bounces off people until there's a concrete case attached. Did she mention a specific school where a speech code got used against the folks who wrote it? That kind of story would probably move more people than the abstract version.
