Appreciation post: my sister's awkward cancer joke actually worked
My sister got diagnosed last spring and at her chemo session she cracked a joke about her port being a USB charger. The nurse laughed, I froze, and honestly I wanted to crawl under the chair. But then she looked at me and said if she can't joke about it, the tumor wins. That hit different because she wasn't being brave or tough, she was just taking control back. Since then I've laughed at things I used to flinch at, but I still wonder where the limit is. Has anyone else had a close family member use humor to reframe their own illness, and did it change what you found funny too?
Honestly I used to think gallows humor was just people dodging the real stuff, like they couldn't face it. But hearing your sister frame it as taking control back kinda flipped a switch for me, it makes way more sense as a survival thing than a deflection. I still catch myself wincing at certain jokes, but now I get that sometimes laughing is the only way to make the scary thing smaller.
