Had to defend a local comic book store owner who got cancelled over a joke

I was at Cosmic Collectibles in Denver last month when someone recorded the owner making a dark joke about a superhero movie and posted it online, calling for a boycott. I wrote a post explaining it was taken out of context and ended up in a 3 day debate with strangers who never even stepped foot in his shop.

Tell the owner to keep a simple recording setup behind the counter so he can show the full context next time someone tries to clip a joke out of nowhere. Saved my buddy's record shop twice last year when people tried the same thing.

Three cameras in my local spot and still had a dude try to claim the owner grabbed his girlfriend. Footage showed she was the one who wouldn't stop touching him. Two weeks of online hate before they could even get the video uploaded to fight it. By then half the Yelp reviews already had the fake story baked in. The recording saved his business but the damage was already done to his rep.

Saw something about this the other day on a Facebook group for small business owners. They were talking about how one bad joke can cost you everything even if it was just a dumb moment. The guy at your shop probably didn't mean anything by it but people online don't care about context. They just see a clip and decide you're the villain. Most of those folks wouldn't even know what it's like to run a store and deal with customers all day. Good on you for sticking up for him.
