Rant: Got dragged online for saying I liked the movie
I went to see the new Dune movie at the AMC in Austin last month. Posted a quick review saying I thought it was solid but not perfect. Next thing I know, some film Twitter account clips my post and I get hundreds of replies calling me a 'fake fan' for not hyping it enough. Has anyone else gotten piled on just for a mild take like that?

Joined the Dune fandom a couple years back and yeah, the gatekeeping is brutal. I posted a pretty mild take saying I preferred the Lynch version for the weirdness factor and got called a 'fake fan' who doesn't understand the books. Like, I've read all six of Herbert's novels twice, but whatever. The worst part is these people act like you can't enjoy both the new movie and the old one for different reasons. It's exhausting trying to share an opinion without some army of superfans jumping down your throat. Makes you not even want to post about anything you like anymore.

Man, that's rough. I'm curious though, when you got called out, was it for preferring the Lynch version or more about how you talked about the new one? I've seen people get roasted just for saying Denis Villenueve's stuff is a little too serious and missing the weird spice agony vibe. Like, can't you just like both for totally different reasons?

Wait, does that mean I have to turn in my "fan card" for also thinking the Lynch version has this weird charm that the new one kinda sanded down? Because honestly, I'm not sure my collection of bootleg spice coffee mugs will get me back in good standing. It's a real bummer when you just want to chat about a movie and suddenly you're defending your whole identity over a mild take about sandworms.
