Appreciation post: the old timer who told me to stop over-screwing my cabinet hinges
I was driving 1 5/8 screws straight through soft maple faces on every hinge for 3 years until he showed me a 3/4 screw and a pilot bit does the same job. Anybody else got a tiny habit like that, that a stranger pointed out and saved you a ton of callbacks?
stop over-screwing my cabinet hinges" is real talk, I did the same thing til a guy at the lumber yard handed me a tapered drill bit and said match the screw to the wood. Now I keep a little index card taped inside my toolbox lid with pilot sizes so I stop guessing.
