My stretcher gauge has been lying to me for 6 months
An old timer on a commercial job in Austin told me to trust my feet, not the gauge, when stretching Weldon carpet. I laughed it off because i always use the gauge for consistency on 12 foot seams. Last week I checked it with a new digital one and found it read 2 pounds light. That explains three callbacks for ripples near doorways that I blamed on the pad. Now I set the gauge to 18 and stretch until my knees say 16, it's been flat for 5 days. Anyone else ditch the gauge after a while or do I just need a better brand?
That "trust your feet" advice sounds wild but it's basically where I landed too after my gauge went bad on a big glue down job. I started setting my gauge higher and backing off until the stretch felt right in my back and legs, and it saved me from a ton of rework. Now I just use the gauge as a rough guide and go by feel for the last few inches, never had a ripple since.
