Stop flipping tack strips for old carpet, measure the pad first

I keep seeing guys rip out carpet and assume the pad is standard 1/2 inch. That bit me on a job in Phoenix last month, the old pad was 7/16 and the new carpet's backing sat too low, so the seam popped near the door. Someone's getting hurt on that height difference, they'll trip right at the threshold. Do yourselves a favor, check the pad thickness and door clearance before you stretch anything. Has anyone else run into this with houses built before 1990?
