I finally tracked every cash dollar for one week and found $47 I can't explain
I keep a paper log in my wallet and last week in Tacoma I spent $312 on gas, food, and a brake job, but when I added it up at night I was short $47 with no receipt to show for it. Turns out small cash leaks are way harder to catch than I thought, so how do you all plug the gaps, separate envelopes or just a running tally?
Envelope systems never worked for me because the money still leaves your pocket the same way. What fixed my missing cash problem was writing down every single purchase the second it happened, right there at the register, even if it was just a soda. The gap you found is probably five or six small buys you forgot about, a coffee here, a snack there, parking meter, that kind of thing. A running tally only helps if you update it in the moment instead of trying to remember at night when your brain is tired. Forty seven bucks a week adds up to over two grand a year, so it is worth chasing down. Try the receipt pocket in your wallet too, just stuff everything in there and sort it once a week.
