Hot take: people keep blaming the app for their card getting frozen, but the real issue is the auto top-up setting nobody reads
I deliver mail in Phoenix and three people on my route asked me for help in the last month because their grocery cards stopped working mid-checkout, and all three had the same thing turned on. When you link a card to a cash app, there's a setting that pulls money from your bank every time your balance drops under a certain amount, and most folks never touch that default. So if your bank account is low, or your paycheck hasn't landed yet, the app tries to pull the top-up anyway, the bank says no, and the app freezes your whole card to protect itself. One guy had $6.40 left and his rent check was still out, so the pull bounced and he couldn't buy milk for two days. It's not that the apps are evil, it's that this one switch turns your spending money into a hostage whenever your bank balance dips. I checked my own app and sure enough mine was set to pull $50 whenever I dropped under $20, and I turned it off. Has anyone else found that setting buried three menus deep, or is it just me?
