My grandpa's $80 cash birthday gift got rejected by two stores last week

Tried to use a crisp $50 bill at a food truck in Portland and the kid said they haven't taken cash in 3 years, then a bodega also turned it down for not having a working credit card machine. Has anyone else had family members give them cash that's basically useless now?

Got the same thing from my aunt last year - handed me a crisp $50 and I honestly couldn't spend it anywhere downtown. Ended up using it at a laundromat that still had an old coin machine. Makes me wonder if stores are just giving up on cash for good now.

Yeah @morgan_king36 that's exactly what I've been noticing too. A lot of places near me have signs saying "card only" or "exact change preferred" and it's getting harder to use cash at all. Tbh it feels like businesses are slowly pushing cash out because it's easier for them to handle cards and digital payments. But the thing is, not everyone has a credit card or wants to use their phone for everything. I think it's going to create a bigger gap between people who can use digital money and people who rely on cash, especially older folks or those without bank accounts. Honestly it's kind of worrying how fast this is happening without anyone really talking about it.
