Am I the only one who thinks canned beans beat dried beans for cheap eating?
Everyone in this group keeps telling folks to buy dried beans because they cost less per pound and I just do not get it. Three weeks ago I sat down with my receipts and did the math for my own kitchen in Columbus. A one pound bag of dried pintos runs about $1.79 at my Kroger, but that bag only makes around 6 cups cooked, so that is roughly 30 cents a cup. Canned pintos at the same store are 89 cents and give me 1.5 cups, which comes to 59 cents a cup. So yes, dried wins on paper by a little, but that is before I count the gas for a 90 minute simmer and the fact that I tossed two whole pots last winter because I let them sit too long in the fridge. For me the cheap move is the can, and I would rather spend the extra 30 cents than babysit a pot on a Tuesday. Does anyone else just flat out skip the dried bean advice, or am I missing something that makes it worth it?
That line about babysitting a pot on a Tuesday is the whole thing for me. A buddy of mine swore by dried beans for years and did the whole soak overnight thing. Then one night he fell asleep watching a game and woke up to a scorched pot and a burnt smell that stuck in his kitchen for days. He tossed the pot, not just the beans. He buys cans now and says his time is worth more than the 30 cents he saves.
