Warning: I switched from canned beans to dried beans and my grocery bill dropped $18 a month, but is the time worth it?
Two months ago I started buying dried pinto beans at the Walmart on 5th instead of the 89 cent cans I always grabbed. A 2 pound bag costs $2.48 and makes about 12 cans worth, so I save maybe $18 a month for my family of four. But here is the thing, I have to soak them overnight and simmer for 90 minutes, which is real time I do not always have after work. My wife says the taste is way better and the texture holds up in chili, but my buddy swears the canned ones are fine and I am just being cheap for no reason. So who is right here, is saving $18 worth losing 2 hours a week, or am I fooling myself that the dried ones actually taste better?
