The repair shop guy in Akron handed me back my Walkman and one sentence stuck with me
Brought my old cassette Walkman to a little repair shop on Market Street in Akron back in March because the tape kept slowing down. The guy behind the counter, maybe 60 years old, popped it open, cleaned the capstan with a q-tip and some alcohol, and had it running smooth in about 10 minutes. He charged me $15 and said, "People throw these out over a dirty wheel, then pay $200 for a new one that dies in a year." That line hit me harder than it should have. I'd been ready to toss a 30 year old player over a problem a swap of two rubber parts could fix. Now I wonder how much of my old gear I gave up on too fast. What's the dumbest small fix that saved a piece of your vintage stuff from the trash?
